Personality: Gojyo is a lecher, a smoker, a gambler, and a drinker. He swears frequently, and likes to pick fights. He has a lot of fun making crude comments to piss off Sanzo and Goku, and takes much pleasure in fighting Goku in the back seat. Actually, doing just about anything to Goku amuses Gojyo.

But mixed in with all that somehow is the way he cares about people. He will delay to help a beautiful woman who is crying, will seek out Hakkai when he wanders off at night, will sidetrack to avenge two poor fooled little boys. His battle with his brother is friendly. Gojyo goes out of his way to help others, for reasons he won’t explain, but they’re related back to when he was helpless himself, helpless and at the mercy of a woman who hated him.

He is a flirt – it’s part of everything he does, from fighting, to arguing, to saving the day. He enjoys teasing his opponents when they’re down, and making jokes at Sanzo’s expense. Somehow that little tone comes creeping into his voice where a simple statement is turned both mocking and flirtatious at the same time.


Background: Gojyo was born to a youkai father and a human mistress. This is why he has red hair and eyes – he is a forbidden half-breed. The youkai wife of his father beat him often, hating the faces she saw in his. One day she tried to kill him, and Gojyo sat there, giving her the chance to do it. He was saved when his older brother, Jien, a full youkai, killed her.

He lost track of his brother sometime after that, living on his own for a while and picking up women right and left until he came across an injured Hakkai on the path. Hakkai’s eyes seemed to say that he wanted to die, so Gojyo decided to take care of him. For three months he tended to Hakkai, and lost card game after card game. When Sanzo and Goku came to capture Hakkai, Gojyo fought Sanzo off, giving Hakkai the chance to go free. They caught up with Hakkai later, after Gojyo had requested that Sanzo and Goku let Hakkai accomplish what he needed to. Gojyo was pleasantly surprised to meet Hakkai later, after Hakkai had been judged by the three aspects, and the two of them joined forces again.

The group of four was recruited by the three aspects to save their world from the Minus Wave and whomever is merging magic with science, and so they’ve set off, journeying West. In the process Gojyo ran into his brother again, who now is part of the group behind the Minus Wave due to a feeling of loyalty. Gojyo and Jien battled, since they’re on opposing sides. There’s no hate between them, but they do have different goals.

Most recently, a being known only as Kami-sama fooled two little boys, killing one and then the other. All the boys had wanted to do was live together, and take care of evil doers. Even though they attacked the Sanzo party, Gojyo sympathized with them because they were taken advantage of. After their deaths, Gojyo set off on his own to find out why and bring a little fairness into play.
